Item #: LUSPIN
Lustres have a thin reflective surface that creates a prism of color. Lusters give a wide variety of effects and the final colors and tones are somewhat unpredictable, affected by the firing temperature, oxygen environment in the kiln, and the other pieces firing in the same kiln. For best results, use a clean dedicated brush, allow to completely dry and then fire at 019-018, making sure you fire in a kiln rich with fresh air. Lustres can be applied over painted surfaces and can be painted over after application. After firing, a brilliant alluring color results, often changing with the viewing angle.
Working with luster is not quite the same as working with other glazes, because the material is slightly different. The main thing to be aware of before you begin experimenting with gold luster underglazes is the absolute necessity of great ventilation. We suggest decorating your artwork and allowing it to dry while under a fume hood, if possible; if that’s not an option, we suggest wearing a fume-filtering respirator and doing your decorating in a space with good air filtration, circulation, or ventilation. You can purchase vapor respirator filters linked here.
