Borax is a compound made of the elements boron and sodium. It is a white, water-soluble powder or granular compound that acts as both a glass former and a low temperature flux. In ceramics, borax has been shown to improve the fit of glaze on greenware and bisque. Additionally, when mixed with oxides, borax produces bright colors. Borax is sometimes referred to as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, borax decahydrate, or disodium tetraborate.
Borax is not typically used in clay bodies; because it is highly water-soluble, this means that it will 'travel' with the water bound up in a clay body furing the drying of a vessel, ultimately migrating to the vessel's surface and leaving behind tell-tale salt-scumming. Of course, this feature can be utilized in single-fire functional wares, as it can be considered a self-glaze.
In addition to its use in ceramics, borax has applications in cosmetics, household detergents, swimming pool chemicals, and soil fertilizers.
