Pyrax is the trade name of pyrophyllite (or pyrophillite), which is a hydrated aluminum silicate material. This means that chemically, Pyrax is very similar to a clay; however, when you handle the powdered material, you might notice that it feels much closer to talc. Indeed, it shares many physical properties with talc. Pyrax is added to clay bodies to reduce thermal expansion, although it can be used for several other ceramics-based purposes as well, such as addition to insulating firebrick as a refractory material. Pyrax as an additive is also used to lower the firing temperature of claybodies.
