Iron Chromite (Cr2FeO4)
Iron chromite is a brownish powder that creates darker colors when added as a colorant to engobes, slips and underglazes. As a colorant, it typically produces grays, by itself. It can produce additional colors when mixed with other chemicals, as well, as is detailed below:
Iron chromite + cobalt or magnesium = blacks
Iron chromite + tin = pinks, reds
Iron chromite + zinc = browns
Suggested concentrations of iron in slips and glazes are as follows:
0.5 - 8% in slips
up to 15% in glazes
This listing is for Iron Chromite, which is often labeled as Iron Chromate.
Iron chromate is highly toxic if absorbed through the skin, inhaled or ingested.
While this product is Iron Chromite and is insoluble and is not a carcinogen, there can be traces of Iron Chromate present in the mix.
We recommend using protective coverings when working with this chemical.
